Quick and Easy Garlic Bread Recipe

Garlic Bread Recipe

Garlic Bread makes a wonderful accompaniment to Spaghetti Bolognese, Lasagne and Pizza and is quick and easy to make. It’s also a great way to use up leftover French Bread Stick or leftover Ciabatta. It seems to work best on slightly stale bread.

Ingredients for Garlic Bread

You will need a:

  • Baguette or a Ciabatta loaf,
  • Butter or Margarine (NOT the low far stuff it will go soggy) or Dairy-Free spread if you’re vegan
  • 2or 3 cloves of Fresh garlic
  • Salt and pepper.
  • If you have some dried parsley to hand, you can also add this but it works as well without.
Firstly Make the Garlic Butter

Take a Tablespoon of Butter or Margarine
Crush a couple of peeled cloves of garlic and add to the butter along with some salt, pepper and parsley if using it. If you have any Garlic Pepper you can also add a little of this too.

Mix well

Cut the Baguette or Ciabatta into half and spread the garlic butter on the bread. Put on a baking tray and cook at Gas mark 5 or 6 or around 200oC until golden brown and bubbly.

Fancy Cheesy Garlic Bread?

Just add a sharp cheese like mature cheddar, or a soft gooey cheese like grated mozzarella (or a vegan cheese-substitute) over the top before cooking.

Made more than you need? Freeze it!

Garlic Bread can be made ahead of time and frozen in a tub for up to one month.

Cooking Tips and Tweaks

You could replace one tsp of ginger powder with one tsp of ground cinnamon if you like

The addition of bicarbonate of soda and the hot water gives them a slightly more bubbly texture. If you don’t have any bicarbonate of soda to hand don’t worry about it as not all recipes include it.

Make this recipe vegan friendly by substituting dairy-free margarine for the butter. Make sure it is NOT a fat-free or low fat version as it will turn back to water and leave a soggy mess.

Storage instructions

These will keep for a few days (theoretically at least!) in an air-tight tub or biscuit tin. We find that in reality, they’re so yummy they tend to last about 20 mins tops before they’re all eaten!
